Social Action
Social Action is the bridge between Temple B’nai Sholem and the New Bern community fulfilling Judaism’s principle of Tikkun Olam “repairing the world” and the precepts of human dignity that are present in the Torah. This principle translates into the community work the congregation delivers. The Temple is a member of Faith Connection a multi-cultural, multi-racial interfaith organization serving New Bern and Craven County that includes members in over 20 churches supporting interfaith dialogue and community events.
The Temple supports Arts To End Genocide (ATEG), core mission of using the power of art to education about human rights and provide advocacy actions to improve the health outcomes of vulnerable children and women in underserved developing world, the annual Church World Service CROP Hunger Walk helping to end hunger, and contributes food to Religious Community Services with their mission of feeding the hungry and housing the homeless in New Bern. The Temple engages in initiatives developed by Religious Action Center (RAC) a social action branch of Union for Reform Judaism.
Our Temple is represented on The Rothermel Foundation Board by one of our members. Rothermel is an important local, interfaith effort that convenes lectures, twice a year, by leading experts on issues of interest or concern to people of faith. These include: science, ethics, religion, and arts and culture. We encourage our members and friends to attend these semi-annual programs.
